Lonely Grandpa Calls Up His Granddaughter In Tears, Asks Her To Have A Sleepover
Loneliness can affect the health and well-being of anyone, and it is a particularly severe problem for the elderly. Whether the person is alone because of the death of a spouse or some other reason, living alone with no one to talk to or interact with is very difficult.
This older man, a kind and loving grandpa, decided to invite his granddaughter for a sleepover. The little girl knew this wouldn’t be the pillow fight, pizza and popcorn kind of sleepover, but she agreed.
The Most Touching Message
Granddaughter Megan Elizabeth adored her grandparents, spending hours and hours with them, making loving memories. Her grandma passed away a few years ago, leaving her 92-year-old grandpa alone and down in the dumps.
Grandpa was pretty with it technology-wise and sent Megan a text via Instagram and TikTok. They also spoke on the phone; once, grandpa was so down he cried during the call. Megan’s heart went out to him, so when he invited her for a sleepover, including a movie and eats, she agreed immediately.
Sharing the Grandpa Texts with her Friends
Megan showed her friends the touching texts sent by her grandpa. Under the image, she explained that her grandpa was in poor health, and she tried to see him as much as possible. When he invited her over, Megan jumped in her car and stopped to get food for the sleepover.
Grandpa wanted applesauce, mashed potatoes, and strawberry ice cream; he was restricted to a soft food diet. Megan was happy to do the shopping and even picked up some KFC on the way.
You’re My Favorite!
Grandpa was very specific about his snack foods, and Megan couldn’t wait to see the look on his face when she arrived with all the goodies. She was so happy to have a chance to cheer grandpa up and spend time with him.
Megan loved sharing the request for ice cream with her friends; she thought it was endearing. And then he called her his favorite granddaughter. She responded to her friends that she was his ONLY granddaughter!
The Sleepover Begins
Megan walked in with the goodies, and her grandpa was thrilled. He turned on an old black-and-white murder mystery for them to watch together and dug in to the treats she had brought. Megan’s pictures show grandpa really enjoying himself.
While Megan was enjoying the KFC, her grandpa was grateful for the treats she brought for him. Because he did not have teeth, he could only consume soft foods.
Strawberry Ice Cream!
Just as grandpa had requested in his texts to Megan, she’d purchased his favorite, strawberry ice cream. She prepared a large ice cream cone for him, and then sat back and watched him enjoy it. It gave her so much pleasure to see him happy.
He looked almost like a kid again, with a big ice cream cone and a smile on his face. She could imagine him as a little boy begging his mother for ice cream, and she hoped that this experience brought back happy memories for him.
When it was time to go to sleep, Megan was almost in tears because grandpa had set up the bedroom the way it had looked when she was little. He had looked forward to this night so much that he had put tremendous effort into the preparation.
He had thought of everything to make her comfortable. She snuggled into the bed, reminded of warm and special moments from her childhood.
I Love My Grandpa so Much
Grandpa had added little caring touches to the room. For example, there was a glass of water near the bed, her grandma’s favorite doll, and a flashlight in case she got scared at night.
Megan recorded her experience minute by minute to show her friends how amazing her grandfather was. At the end of her video, she wrote, “Staying here brings back so many good memories from my childhood. I love my grandpa so much.”
Time to Go
Megan woke up early in the morning so that she could get to work. She got up and dressed, trying not to wake grandpa. He needed his sleep, so she decided to call him later in the day to thank him.
But grandpa heard her and got out of bed. He didn’t want her to leave without a proper goodbye. Megan’s love for grandpa was overflowing. She texted her friends, “If that’s not pure love, I don’t know what is.”
The Family Story
In order to answer some of her friends’ questions, Megan decided to share her family’s story on Instagram. She had grown up across the street from her grandparents and felt very fortunate to have had a close relationship with them.
She remembered that her grandpa and grandma had always loved feeding the grandkids ice cream, and that she had always loved grandma’s doll and hoped it would be hers one day. Her gratitude for what life had given her was touching, “I am thankful for my grandpa, and he will never understand how much love he truly has shown me.”
Megan’s grandma passed away a few years ago from Alzheimer’s Disease. Grandma and grandpa had met by a quirk of fate when grandma’s friend was too nervous about going on a blind date alone, so she invited grandma, and the date invited grandpa. It was instant attraction.
The couple’s relationship grew; they wrote letters to each other, even while he was serving in the Air Force. Once he returned, they married and had two children.
Christmas with Grandma
Megan’s grandma loved Christmas, so the family decided to plant a pine tree in her honor when she became ill. They decorated it every year. Sometimes Megan would leave a note for her grandma, hoping she would find it eventually and enjoy it in her own way.
Megan has over 254,000 followers on social media, who have loved hearing the story of this special family and Megan’s interactions with her grandparents. The posts have inspired many of her followers.
Special Ways to Remember
On Megan’s social media platforms, she emphasizes that acts of kindness and remembrance make life more meaningful. She is not shy about expressing her love for family and the need to spread that love.
She posted a picture of the little tree her grandpa would draw on her arm to remember grandma. The entire family missed grandma, especially on Christmas. In this way, the tattoo would remind everyone, all day, that grandma was watching over them.
Lessons to Cherish
Megan’s inspiring videos on TikTok and Instagram have received many comments from people who thank her for teaching them lessons about cherishing family and making a difference in people’s lives.
She writes, “Even if you’ve not been close to your grandparents or haven’t been able to know them, there are ways to make a difference….” The story of Megan and her grandparents shows that even a small act, like a loving text, or a more significant act, like a sleepover, can help a lonely person.
The Privilege of Knowing Your Grandparents
It is heartbreaking when an older person cries from loneliness, and we only want to comfort them and improve their lives. Sometimes there’s not much we can do except remind them often how much their family loves them.
We all know that we will be in their place one day, and we hope that our family treats us with this kind of respect and attention. Megan has taught her readers to appreciate and cherish family and never to take them for granted. We wish Megan and her grandpa the gift of more time to enjoy each other’s company.
